Echoes of Absence: A Bittersweet Reunion

I met Aditi today after many days. She was standing alone by a deserted road, lost in some distant memory. The edge of her saree fluttered in the breeze, and from afar, it seemed as though she had been waiting for me for years. As I approached her, a cold, piercing look flashed in her large eyes. She was angry—her face flushed red, her lips trembling as if she were holding a mountain of questions. She darted her gaze here and there, sometimes glaring at me, as if silently asking, "Where were you all these days? Didn’t you even think of me?"

I stood there quietly, watching her. There was a crack in her voice that tore at my chest. "Do I mean nothing to you?" she said, her words halting, and suddenly, a sheen of moisture glistened in her eyes. They weren’t tears—just a deep sadness, blaming me, cursing me for not coming, for leaving her alone. Every word, every glance of hers struck my heart like a dagger. I wanted to say something, but my tongue felt tied.

Yet, in that anger, in that sorrow, she looked extraordinary. Her face—flushed with rage—was so beautiful. The last rays of the sun fell on her tear-streaked cheeks, and she seemed like a dream. I gently took her hand. She hesitated for a moment, then looked at me. Her eyes were still moist, but a faint smile danced on her lips.

"Don’t go again," she whispered, resting her head on my shoulder. A sweet warmth filled my heart, tinged with the sting of regret for causing her so much pain. We stood there, close to each other, swaying between joy and sorrow. The sun had set, but in our world, a new dawn was beginning—happy, yet laced with that unspoken sadness.

अकेला कमल

कमलनाथ चारपाई पर बैठे हुए गहरी सोच में डूबे थे। घर में हलचल थी, मेहमान आने वाले थे, रानी का जन्मदिन जो था। लेकिन कमलनाथ की दुनिया उस चारपाई के दायरे से आगे नहीं बढ़ पा रही थी।

रानी उन्हें देख रही थी। उसने महसूस किया कि उसके पिता कुछ बदले-बदले से लग रहे हैं। उसने धीरे से पास जाकर कहा—

"पापा, अगर बदलाव आपको इतना कठिन लगता है, तो क्यों ना हम इसे छोटे-छोटे कदमों में करें?"

कमलनाथ मुस्कुराए, लेकिन उनकी मुस्कान में हल्का सा संकोच था। वह जानते थे कि रानी की बातें सीधी और सच्ची थीं। लेकिन क्या इतने सालों की आदतें इतनी आसानी से बदल सकती हैं?

रात को जब सारे मेहमान चले गए और घर में शांति थी, तब कमलनाथ अकेले बैठे रहे। सुधा उनके पास आई और बोली—

"क्या सोच रहे हैं?"

कमलनाथ ने लंबी सांस ली और कहा—

"रानी सच कहती है, सुधा। मैं सालों से इस चारपाई पर बैठा दुनिया देख रहा हूँ, लेकिन खुद कभी नहीं बदला। मैं हमेशा यही मानता रहा कि जिंदगी बहाव में चल रही है, फिर बदलाव क्यों लाऊं? लेकिन आज मुझे लग रहा है कि शायद यही मेरी सबसे बड़ी भूल थी।"

सुधा मुस्कुराई—

"समय के साथ बदलना ज़रूरी है, कमल। वरना जीवन ठहर जाता है।"

कमलनाथ ने चारपाई को देखा, उसे छुआ और जैसे बीते सालों को महसूस किया। फिर उन्होंने एक ठहराव भरी आवाज़ में कहा—

"कल सुबह पहली चीज़, इस चारपाई को हटा देंगे।"

सुधा ने चौंककर उनकी ओर देखा।

"सच में?"

कमलनाथ मुस्कुरा दिए—

"हाँ, बदलाव की शुरुआत कहीं से तो करनी ही होगी!"

अगली सुबह, जब रानी उठी, तो उसने देखा कि आंगन में रखी पुरानी चारपाई हटाई जा रही थी। वह भागकर पिता के पास आई और उनकी आँखों में देखा।

कमलनाथ ने उसकी ओर देखा और मुस्कुराते हुए कहा—

"आज पहला कदम उठा लिया, बेटा। आगे की राह तुम्हारे साथ तय करेंगे!"

रानी की आँखें चमक उठीं।

कमलनाथ अकेले नहीं थे, अब उनके साथ उनकी बेटी और एक नया सफर था—बदलाव की ओर!

Every morning, when I sit on my balcony to study, I place a small bowl with some namkeen chivda a little distance away, hoping that even a tiny bird might come and fill its little stomach.

After a while, a small sparrow cautiously arrives, tiptoeing as if trying to convince itself that I am not watching. Hesitant yet driven by hunger, it slowly approaches the bowl, quickly pecks at the chivda, and takes a few grains with it before flying away.

This has now become a daily ritual. This little, innocent bird saves me from loneliness, even if just for a while.

रोज़ सुबह जब मैं बालकनी में पढ़ने बैठता, तो मैं अपने बगल से थोड़ी दूरी पर एक छोटे से बर्तन में कुछ नमकीन चिवड़ा रख देता, कि कोई छोटी-सी ही सही, चिड़िया आएगी और अपना पेट भरेगी।

When we see someone for the first time, we often judge them based on their outward appearance and form an opinion about whether they are good or bad. But can we truly understand a person solely based on their physical beauty? In my opinion, it has no real significance.

What we see isn’t always good. You must have heard the saying, "All that glitters is not gold." Similarly, we need to accept the reality that a person's true beauty lies in their way of thinking, their thoughts, and their behavior—not in their outward appearance.

Often, an action by one person might seem good to someone and bad to someone else. This makes it clear that there is no fixed standard for beauty or goodness. It all depends on how the other person perceives it.

If we view life from a significant perspective, there is no real difference between humans and animals.
